The Idea Team

The Crossover Project aims to focus public an private R&D spending on marketable technologies. Crossover will investigate, frame and market technology demand and help attract funding from appropriate sources. The Crossover Project will achieve this by breaking barriers of communication and trust between those seeking new technologies and those capable of offering solutions. Crossover will encourage exchange across regions, scientific disciplines and the public / private barrier.

The London Air Pollution Project

Independent research demonstrates that high levels of air pollutants in urban UK are detrimental to people's health, with a government estimate of health costs associated with polluion standing at 1.3 billion per year and rising. There exists an opportunity to develop an inexpensive, single use, disposable, personal health mask for those who need it most - the elderly, commuters, health conscious and cyclists. The LAPP intends to commercialise and market such a product and provide a public health benefit. The organisation is a not-for-profit supported by government (local and regional) and social-orientation institutions.

The OME Corporation

The life-sciences optical microscopy market was $527 million in 2004 ($702 million in 2009).Over a period of five years we have used $1 million of government funding to develop a software tool (OME) for scientists to store, view, annotate, and search their laboratories' microscopy images. OME's simplified image management enables labs to optimize their microscopy investments and their scientists' time. As such, OME is already used in several external laboratories. With $100,000 we would commercialize OME, providing support and consultation to laboratories. We project positive cash-flow in one year and $1 million annual revenue in three years.

Timepeace

The use of oyster cards in London is not widespread. Travelers waste valuable time at the ticket gates checking their pockets to find their oyster cards. Cheap watches are abundant in London's street markets but their battery life is not long. These watches are often cheaper to replace than the batteries themselves, wasting resources in the long run. Timepeace converts old watches into kinetic-powered watches with an Oyster chip inside, personalized with a chosen picture or charity logo on the watchface. It will save time, ease the people traffic at train stations, help the environment, and proceeds go to charities.

Traffic-LED

Traffic-LED will replace every light bulb in every traffic light in the country with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), saving energy and reducing carbon emissions. The key to Traffic-LED's success is the high efficiency of LEDs: they are up to ten times more efficient than the most energy-efficient conventional lighting. Bulb replacement LED units are already available and can last over thirty times longer than a light bulb. But the cost is at least a hundred times too high. Traffic-LED will encourage a longer-term view by financing initial investment with reduced running costs: Traffic-LEDs will cost less than light bulb.

VirtualTourPro

We have developed an in-house hardware based panoramic creation technique. This, coupled with our extremely simple to use software, is to be marketed as VirtualTourPro. The system presents and extremely powerful tool for modern estate agents, enabling production of their own high quality full screen panoramas. VirtualTourPro has been designed to fill this thus far neglected segment of the booming virtual tour creation market. It is placed between the high cost subcontracted work carried out by professional photographers, and the low cost, but visibly lower quality, tours currently photographed by estate agents.

Xenon-54 Promotions

The majority of corporate firms in the UK actively recruit university graduates. One of the key ways to attract the attention of students (potential employees) is by giving away company-branded promotional products (freebies). At present, there is no supplier to the market who specialises in providing promotional products for use in Graduate Recruitment initiatives. This is where Xenon-54 Promotions comes in. Xenon-54 Promotions has identified the needs of both its clients (large corporate firms) and its target market (the student population) and aims to provide unique 'high-use', commodity products that can provide companies with the most comprehensive marketing coverage possible.

You-Can

You-Can is a web-based portal to facilitate an efficient and effective donation process, which maximizes the benefits for both donors and recipients. It is an interface that permits interaction between donors allowing collaboration as a means to achieve a specific goal. These goals are monetary targets which, once achieved, fund specific social schemes run by small, local charities in developing countries. The web service allows for clear and immediate visualisation of progression towards pre-set goals so that users can gain an immediate view as to the effectiveness of their donation. You-Can therefore overcomes these charities' current inability to secure much needed funding from abroad whilst enhancing the 'donation-giving experience'.
