Repindex

Repindex stands for 'Representation Index'. It is a tool which facilitates analysis of the stream of language. By continuously searching selected Internet sources in real time, Repindex allows the user to track the development of the meaning of language items and to extract value. Repindex is also used to search for information over time and make comparisons between results in different groups, such as different language media. Repindex is based on Discourse Stream Analysis developed in Mark Perkins' PhD thesis. It relies on linguistic principles of identifying and describing patterns in large bodies of text.

room7

Everyday products, services and environments are designed within tight budget and time constraints. Consequently, designers find themselves prevented from involving real end-users to assess the ease of use (i.e. usability and accessibility) of their creations. Lack of user participation during the design process may result in inaccessible products for a large number of consumers. This project focuses on the future commercialisation of a Simulation Assessment Toolkit (SAT), which 'reproduces' the symptoms of physical impairments older and disabled people may experience. SAT is to be used by decision-makers, designers, design educators and students as a method of assessing product and service accessibility. It allows the wearer to experience in a practical and low cost manner a wide range of problems faced by users with physical impairments, when they are not readily available due to constraints typically imposed on real-life design projects.

Secure Architecture

Secure Architecture is combining the physical and information technology fields by using security as the segue. Secure Architecture will provide security services using a unique method uncommonly known as 'transparent security' to test the security of a organizations at the perimeter, physical and logic level (information technology). Secure Architecture will employ Architects, Information Technology, and Security experts all under one roof. Transparent security by definition is a security process that can be easily overloaded, thus not being obvious.

Slant

The deployable wheelchair ramp provides disabled access in accordance with the Disabilities Discrimination Act, while preserving the architectural sense of listed buildings protected by English Heritage. The ramp is built into the ground and steps so that it is almost unnoticeable and does not obstruct pedestrians in its initial configuration. It deploys via remote control and provides a parapet and an audible warning such that it complies with British Standards. The ramp initially has a niche market in Coventry colleges, but future generations will extend the market to all historic buildings which require disabled access.

SleepCap

Sleep disorder is a major health problem worldwide. SleepCap offers an obvious solution. Sleep ensues when there is a change in brain waves from the waking state. A cap worn over the head, it comprises electrodes in contact with the scalp, which produce gentle oscillations of electrical potential, inducing sleep innocuously. Once commercialised, everyone will be able to enjoy a good night's sleep, and will subsequently be able to perform better during the day. SleepCap will also be able to enhance memory consolidation by boosting slow oscillations during sleep.

SmartElec

'SmartElec' is a plug adapter containing a chip which processes information about the electricity price sent over the power lines by electricity suppliers. It will be sold to electricity suppliers, who will distribute the plug adapters to their customers with Real Time Pricing contracts. The SmartElec plug adapters allow consumers to shift load from expensive to less expensive time periods by switching 'on' or 'off' some electrical goods (e.g. heaters, water tanks etc), and therefore reduce their electricity bills.

Sphera

Sphera will develop information compression technology for data defined on the surface of a sphere (i.e. data spheres). In current applications data spheres are stored naively with limited compression. Preliminary tests indicate that our new compression schemes can reduce data spheres to 5% of their uncompressed size. Data spheres play a key role in emerging live computer graphics applications and our compression technology will provide substantial commercial benefits in this industry. We are seeking start up funds to form a limited company, investigate the patentability of our compression algorithms and to develop an initial release of our software products.

su-chef

su-chef is a system that seamlessly plugs into existing smart home environments and achieves the automatic coordination of intelligent devices. It employs artificial intelligence technology to transparently compose sequences of operations (to be executed on several devices simultaneously), which will meet a goal set by the user (for instance, 'cook lasagne'). It then executes the instructions, monitors the progress of the process, and adapts to environmental changes in order to ensure the successful completion of the task. In a fast-growing market such as the smart home one - an estimated $27 billion a year will be spent on smart domestic technology this year in the US, su-chef stands to gain significant market share in a relatively short time span. The problem of automatic coordination of smart home devices to achieve complex tasks, such as cooking, remains largely unexplored. su-chef will initially market its solutions to three distinct market segments including smart home providers, large restaurants, and consumers. The su-chef team intends to patent the developed technology.

Safe boxes, lockers, and most security tolls exist to protect our property, our investment, and our confidential information from competitors and rivals. At Textguard, we lower the need for all those measures by securing what is most valued on the most used information containment media - paper. Paper and its contents, as the largest source of information leakage in corporate firms have now been secured only to be read by those intended addresses and no others. The convenience and simple use of our product stimulates fast growth of our product in the market.

The Coventry Tiffin Company

The primary market need we are trying to address is the lack of cheap and healthy takeaway food in Coventry, accessible to members of different faiths and of differing dietary requirements. We will offer students and citizens in central Coventry an affordable, healthy, homemade Indian meal that can be pre-ordered and collected from a collection van in central Coventry, as opposed to the overpriced or unhealthy food that is currently available. Our product provides an affordable alternative to the current catering available, with long opening hours allowing flexibility for busy students, and accessibility for all members of the community.

The Good Tenant Database

The background checks landlords make on prospective tenants form an essential part of the process of letting property, as once a tenancy agreement is entered into, it can often be difficult for landlords to evict troublesome tenants. The money lost during the time taken to evict a tenant causes significant frustration to landlords. My proposal is an online service that allows landlords to submit feedback on tenants, associating this with a profile for each tenant. This allows tenants to build up a highly reliable online record of their previous tenancies, submitted directly by landlords.
