NaviBike

London is congested, polluted, and public transport sucks. The use of bicycles could solve a number of imminent congestion problems and is an environment friendly solution to reduce inner city pollution by increasing personal mobility. We propose a self-funding scheme hereby bicycles are provided for free and a 2 coin deposit, much like shopping trolleys. This will ensure that the bikes are eventually returned to a central location after being used. The cycles also contain a GPS and mobile phone, assisting in security and logistics whilst providing revenue streams via SMS-paid locking, navigation and location specific advertising.

NeoHeal

Sutures are the oldest method of wound closure and consist of a string or thread used to realign wound or blood vessel edges. The European and US wound closure market accrued $4B in revenue in 2005. The current wound closure market strategy is to focus on novel technology that minimizes scarring and decreases wound recovery time. However products currently in market provide limited protection from bacterial infection, do not promote tissue healing, and delay wound recovery by releasing acidic residues. NeoSutures will meet these unmet consumer needs by employing nanotechnology to promote tissue repair and wound recovery.

Peer review is an essential part of academic research, but as information technology has evolved, publishers, who were once important contributors, have become parasitic to the process. Although most reviewers aren't paid, and editors only to limited degrees, publishers overwhelmingly secure the copyright of articles, sometimes charging prohibitive amounts for access to them. Ultimately, all parties involved have grown displeased with this system, except for the publishers, of course; but their presence is largely dispensable. We propose a system, borrowing ideas from on-line social networks, which aims to put authors more directly in contact with their readers.

Nology

Neural imaging is an exciting area of innovation because it can measure raw, pre-verbalised responses to a stimulus (such as advertising) which eliminates the difficulties consumers have expressing what they are feeling and thinking. Nology would be a research and umbrella consultancy company working in the practical applications of neuroscience for marketing. Nology would use various imaging techniques to test spikes in brain waves. It would combine these technologies with experimental psychology to help companies develop their adverts for maximum effect. Nology's consultancy work would interpret the results scientifically, providing clients with a full report on the implications of tests.

Podfun

Current mass-market mobile phone handsets offer fast processors, colour screens and the ability to run third party applications written in the Java programming language. These handsets are touted as a potential platform for entertainment services, including downloadable music, video and games. It is estimated that, at the end of 2004, the annual market for mobile games in particular was worth around $3.1 billion. This lucrative market has been the focus of many start-up companies, such as Gameloft and Mforma, and has increasingly drawn the attention of incumbents such as Electronic Arts. Podfun is a Coventry-based company, founded by members of the Computer Laboratory. We have identified an opportunity to provide a graphics middleware product to mobile phone game developers, and to sell a range of services around our product offering.

PostPeerReview.org

The absence of an organized 'post peer review' process causes difficulty in efficiently assessing an experiment's reproducibility. This is unlikely to change because (1) readers of journal publications rarely communicate with the bench scientist who actually performed the published experiments and (2) there is a lack of cohesion among manuscripts, protocols from the Internet, and methodology/review forums. The costs of this problem are (1) frustration for young experimentalists and (2) wasted public funding in unnecessary duplication. Our solution is to create a web resource called www.PostPeerReview.org that promotes interaction among bench scientists. This web resource will devise and apply a reproducibility index based on feedback on published experiments and provide a wiki-like tool/database for new experiments and protocols.

Presario Partners

Last year, in the UK, there were 18,170 people injured and 643 people killed as a result of domestic house fires. More than half of these deaths occurred between 10pm and 8am and are a result of fire blocking natural escape routes from the first floor. Current government recommendations in such an event are to jump from the window and cushion the fall using bedding, cushions etc. The Home Evac Slide is an innovative new product that will be fitted under the first-floor windows of a house and be deployed when an emergency evacuation is required.

Pret-A-Photo

Due to the photographers' desire to preserve professional quality images as 'artworks', thus only selling them as prints, the potential of innovative dissemination of images remains unexploited. We thus want to offer a new photographic service in a high-resolution format on a customized support. While allowing the customer to take fully advantage of the immediacy and versatility of the digital image, the support can also be used as a powerful advertisement support. This service would be sold as a package to event organisers for a fixed tariff plus a unit price depending on which products they wish to include.

PRoB

PRoB has developed a novel current sensing technology which implements the Rogowski (air-cored) current sensing technique through an innovative PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design. The product name, PRoB, stands for Printed Rogowski Board. The novel current probe has lower manufacturing costs (by as much as 30%) and weight (by as much as 40%) through significant reduction of copper usage, and higher accuracy as compared to the existing technologies. Since the technology is innovative and critical, there is great market potential.

ProteinCovery

The aim of my business ProteinCovery is to identify proteins that bind to DNA, which represent important targets for drug discovery and to use these to identify novel drugs. Such proteins have major functions in disease processes (e.g. cancer, diabetes) and represent potential targets for drugs. So far, there is no good means by which proteins that bind to a specific DNA fragment can be identified. During my PhD I have developed a novel, fast and powerful method to identify DNA binding proteins.

PTERONICS

Pteronics is a small start-up biotech company. The basis of the company is a platform technology based on antineoplastic effect of an existing drug (from here-on termed 'X'), which its patent has already lapsed, against several cancer types. Currently X is being marketed by a largepharmaceutical company for an entirely different purpose. Pteronics aims to patent this platform technology and form a strategic alliance with this company to bring this drug into the market. The application of existing drug for novel use together with the strategic alliance will give various advantages including a relatively inexpensive and fast clinical trial, existing manufacturing know-how and available distribution channel.

PureAid

Our idea is develop the next generation of alcohol-based gel dispensers, primarily for the use of hospitals and other medical institutions. In recent years, there has been a push by many governing institutions in the developed world towards alcohol-based gel. this is because they are easier to use and more effective at killing germs and bacteria than traditional methods, for example soap, water and a towel. This report outlines many of the issues with current alcohol-based gel dispensers on the market, going on to explain how PureAid intends to solve these problems.
