Food Enterprise Project

Food entrepreneurship - whether small catering companies or corner-store take-away restaurants is one of the most common forms of entrepreneurship in deprived communities. In the United States, food and hospitality businesses are the largest contributors to small business job creation, but unfortunately also suffer from below-average survival rates, with only 43.8% of firms lasting four years. Starting in Philadelphia, USA as a for-profit social enterprise, the Food Enterprise Project will develop a preferred channel to market for food entrepreneurs from disadvantaged communities, boosting business survival rates and spurring the creation of fulfilling jobs and dynamic businesses in areas of economic deprivation.

GlobalEZ

Contemporary communication technology has proved the will of the individual to share, whether it is knowledge (Wikipedia), property (Open Office) or hobbies and feelings (internet forums). However, internet surfers are far from being rewarded or making a non-virtual profit for their sharing. Yachin Ivry, an Israeli nanoscience PhD student at Coventry University, has identified this potential and naturally thought on GlobalEZ. The goal of GlobalEZ goal is to create a reliably supervised, yet competitive e-commerce centre. It is going to develop the individuals' trade market in the internet leaning on a smart and origin system.

GlucoMedix

Diabetes is a serious epidemic facing the industrialised world, estimated to affect over 8% of the population by 2010. The major challenge faced by diabetics today is to accurately monitor their blood glucose levels. Failure to do so can lead to serious medical consequences. Current solutions involve costly invasive and inconvenient blood measurements. Therefore there is a significant unmet need for a non-invasive and reliable blood glucose monitoring device, which would be capable of continuous blood glucose monitoring. We intend to develop a non-invasive blood glucose monitoring machine, which could be used by diabetics and non-diabetics alike.

GreenPowerGenerators

Reduction in power generation costs will reduce the electricity charge for customers. Two major costs in all power stations are Equipment and Maintenance costs. Higher efficiencies also cheapen electricity charges and benefit environment. Reliability is a very important issue in power stations. Each blackout can cause damage to the tune of billions of pounds. Most blackout caused by the failures of turbine generators. GreenPowerGenerators has developed a novel brushless doubly-fed generator for wind and wave power stations. The novel generator has less manufacturing costs (by down to 10%) and maintenance costs (by down to 60%) and is more efficient (by up to 5%) and more reliable. It operates in a wider range of speeds and introduces higher power quality into the grid (i.e. less harmonic pollution). The market for this technology is largely composed of power plant suppliers. Electrical motor and generator manufacturers are also the target companies. Since the technology is innovative and critical, there is great market potential.

Horizon Discovery

Despite recent advances, the pharmaceutical industry is still pursuing expensive, and lengthy, approaches to the discovery of oncology drugs with limited efficacy and safety. This results in treatments which are unpleasant for the patient and susceptible to a reduction in effectiveness (resistance). Using innovative genetic manupulation tools, Horizon Discovery has access to a new technology which will allow itself, and partner pharmaceutical companies, to develop cost-effective medicines that are optimally tailored to specific cancer defects. By taking such a focused, 'personalised medicine', approach, Horizon Discovery will be able to reduce drug development costs and supply better medicines to the patient.

I.E. Solutions

King's Corner is a relatively unknown card game. It's simple, addictive and fun to play as a pass-time. As of 2006, there are no high-quality mass-market versions available, for the PC and mobile platforms. I.E. Solutions proposes to develop an innovative virtual version of the game. Unlike other virtual card games, it will not be a simple port from the traditional arena to a computing environment. Instead, a new approach will be used, giving the software a unique user interface, high-quality graphics and ease of use. We will later develop similar-styled software utilities for these platforms.

Independent Work

Independent Work will put independent schools requiring teachers in touch with teachers already in the system. It will be a newsletter delivered for free to independent schools every week. Its content will be advertisements for teaching posts, paid for by the recruiting school. The logistics will be straightforward. Schools will pay for and email their adverts to the company by a certain day each week. These advertisements will then be typeset and a number of copies of the newsletter delivered to independent schools around the country. They will then be made available in social spaces such as staff rooms.

Info Co-op

Many small-scale Kenyan coffee farmers are forced to sell their coffee at a loss. The marketing structure makes farmers powerless once they turn their coffee into factory. They don't have access to information to be able to negotiate a better payment from local traders. Info Co-op seeks to make an impact on the current situation in Kenya. With a combination of affordable information and financial service optimized for small-scale coffee farmers, Info Co-op is trying to deliver farmers in Kenya means to plan spread the risk in coffee growing and resources to put the plan into practice.

InterGenomics Group

The InterGenomics Group seeks to transform modern medicine by incorporating complex genetic information into the care of individual patients. IgG has developed the first practical method to accurately predict and alter the genetic risk of common human diseases based on each person's unique Pattern of Polymorphism. IgG intends to market a series of predictive genetic tests that can not only reveal each person's genetic destiny, but also empower them with the knowledge to change it. The ability to predict and alter genetic risk will fundamentally transorm clinical medicine by introducing personalised disease prevention using predictive genetic tests.
