11 Jun 2008 - 21:00

Date: Wednesday 11 June 2008
Time: 6pm for 6.30pm start
Venue: The Cambridge Union Building (Map)

Dress code: business dress

Please register for this event here.

Back in October, we took groups of students, added a dash of inspiration, sprinkled with £1k prizes and nurtured with mentoring and business training - what did we get? 12 hugely promising teams ready to set up businesses.

At the CUE Grand Finale we will announce the winners of the Entrepreneurs' Challenge 2008. In addition to being awarded £5k each to kick-start their companies, each team will have the chance to pitch for further prizes before a panel of angel investors including Robert Sansom, Jonathan Milner, Adrian Critchlow and Ewan Kirk.

After the ceremony, you will be able to mingle with the winners and business community over drinks and refreshments at the Union bar.

We really do hope that you will be able to make it and look forward to welcoming you to our end of year finale. Please let us know whether you’ll be there either by registering online.

This event is part of Enterprising Cambridge, three days of intense entrepreneurial activity. Visit www.EnterprisingCambridge.com to find out more.

CoolWind

CoolWind has developed a low-cost grid-connected micro wind turbine for domestic applications. The plug-and-play product offers significant reduction in capital costs compared to its existing competitors, making micro wind far more affordable to customers. Apart from being environmentally friendly and reducing the carbon footprint, the payback period for the CoolWind turbine is expected to be very attractive to capture a large untapped market base.

Microantenna

Microantenna is a wireless technology spin-off from the University of Cambridge. The company has developed a disruptive microantenna which can transmit and receive radio waves over a very broad frequency range in the radio frequency spectrum. The device of micrometric dimensions is smaller than the smallest antenna currently available in the market by a factor of 100. It can also be integrated with semiconductor components on a chip which has not been possible so far. Its low power consumption, high sensitivity and its compatibility with existing fabrication processes make it a strong candidate for the market.

VEINBAY

Varicose veins are dilated veins on the legs underneath the skin surface caused by impaired vein valve function. This condition is common and increases with age. Complications include ulceration, clot formation and skin eczema. Current treatments are invasive, expensive, can be performed only by physicians and cause side-effects. Consequently 98% of patients do not receive treatment. Veinbay will offer efficient, non-invasive, convenient and cost-effective treatment for varicose veins. Transdermal patches will deliver controlled release of drug combinations to the diseased veins and treat the condition. The superior qualities of Veinbay will make it a treatment of choice for varicose veins.

Carta Mea

Carta Mea's vision is the democritisation and globalisation of electronic medical records, facilitating the move towards the empowered patient by providing a web based repository for data, together with supporting tools to enhance their ability to manage their condition. Connecting for Health (CfH), the UK's National Programme for IT, has had much publicised difficulties, with some projects 8 years behind schedule which has forced it to refocus on core enablement, standards and infrastructure. Carta Mea's focus is on discrete areas where we believe we can rapidly impact on patient and health professional experience.

Rescent

Rescent is an innovative technology that utilises a novel vesicle-polymer gel technology to release a perfume or cologne over a period of several hours. When the original area of application is rubbed gently, the generated shear stresses disrupt the vesicle system, freeing fragrance molecules and delivering a fresh burst of fragrance. By licensing this technology to companies that are competitively placed within the global fragrance market, Rescent aims to make a significant turnover within three to five years. The Rescent technology platform provides a unique and extremely marketable advantage in a market dominated by customer desire for technological innovation.
